Metal extrusions against a translucent blue background.

Something of an undervalued art form in my opinion, perhaps because the photographer usually has greater control over the conditions in which the subject is photographed suggesting that it should be easier to get the ‘right’ shot. Not so.

Whilst studio lighting and carefully composed backgrounds greatly assist still life photography, considerable skill may be required to make the comparatively mundane look interesting! Then there is the balance between making a photograph – say of a piece of specialised equipment – informative whilst at the same time visually interesting and aesthetically pleasing. The photograph above of short sections of metal extrusions, which were photographed on blue acetate on a light table, is a case in point.
