I love the smell of Castrol R in the morning …
I spent my teenage years living in the centre of a road racing circuit in Northern Ireland – the long gone ’Carrowdore 100’. My mum cursed the lingering aroma of burnt Castrol R because the smell tainted the clean clothes drying on the washing line. However I welcomed the distinctive smell since it heralded the annual motorcycle road race in the country roads around our home.
Motorsport photography is usually the most exciting part of my work: as an enthusiastic motorcyclist and photographer myself, it doesn’t come much better then when I’m commissioned to photograph motorsport events. Nothing beats being able to go ‘live side’ at an event to get close to the action such as when I was commissioned by the Mobile Aiwa British Superbike Championship team to photograph events and create and maintain their web site.
That said, good sports photography requires considerable skill, patience and often a bit of luck!
